Established in 1992, and licensed by Tasmania’s Parks and Wildlife Service, Bicheno Penguin Tours is the natural way to see the fairy (or Little Blue) penguins and many of our visitors have travelled from around the globe to view them.
Centrally located on the East Coast of Tasmania is the small township of Bicheno, a popular holiday destination for Tasmanians. Boasting pristine surf beaches, world class diving, fantastic seafood, vineyards, cafes, galleries and a range of accommodation and shopping opportunities, Bicheno has become one of Tasmania’s premier tourist destinations.
Backing onto the iconic Freycinet National Park and surrounded by the Douglas Apsley National Park, Bicheno is also home to Bicheno Penguin Tours.
Each evening at dusk, groups of little penguins return from the sea at Bicheno and waddle from the shore, determined to reach their nests where offspring are often waiting to be fed.
This tour gives you a rare chance to visit a private rookery and watch the penguins emerge from the ocean and head to their homes – and nothing stops their determined journey.
Aided by soft lighting provided by solar panels, tour participants are able to see the penguins, often within arm’s reach, and sometimes the penguins actually walk over your feet!
Tour guides are well-versed in every nuance and habit of the penguins and carry out a well-informed narrative of the penguins life cycle, biology and their history during the tour.
During the winter months expect to see male penguins renovating or building new burrows. In spring and summer, chicks will be hatching and it is a very busy time with adults feeding and caring for their young.
Numbers are strictly limited so as not to disturb the penguins. Bookings are essential.
