The charming little town of Strahan on Tasmania’s West Coast is known for its wilderness surroundings and rich history. It plays host to two of the state’s most sought-after experiences; cruising the Gordon River and travelling on the historic West Coast Wilderness Railway.
Scratch the surface in Strahan however, and you will find a number of other activities that may take your fancy. One of these is the Bonnet Island Experience, a 2.5 hour fully-guided tour that departs Strahan just before sunset each day in the MV Sophia, a custom-built charter vessel and cruises to Bonnet Island near the mouth of Macquarie Harbour. Your group size will be no more than 11 guests and will be looked after by a guide and the skipper of your boat.
Cruising to Bonnet Island as the sun sets, your guide will spin a few tales of years gone by in Strahan before docking the vessel and taking you on a short familiarisation of Bonnet Island. Then, return to your boat to enjoy the last of the sunset with Tasmanian cheese platters, beer, wine and soft drinks. As night falls, the Little Penguins begin to return to their burrows and this is your call to once again step ashore and with the assistance of infrared torches that are provided by your guide, watch these amazing little creatures finishing their day.
The tour is intimate, respectful and the guide and skipper are attentive to the fact that you are visiting the penguins’ home.
After watching the spectacle of the penguins returning to Bonnet Island, once again board the MV Sophia and return to Strahan to finish your day, perhaps after a nightcap looking over the beautiful harbour.
