There aren’t many locations in Tasmania more elegant or fitting for a hosted tasting than Freycinet Lodge. Perched atop the red granite that borders Great Oyster Bay, ‘The Lodge’ is open to all visitors, whether for a peek at the view, a romantic dinner or a relaxing couple of nights in Freycinet National Park.
One of the highlights of the list of things to do in Freycinet National Park is a hosted whisky or wine tasting at Freycinet Lodge. In the cooler months, you may find yourself fireside with the big stone fireplace and in summer, you can kick back by the windows, looking over the view.
Tasmania or Scotland – You be the judge
Enjoy three premium Tasmanian whiskies alongside three of their Scottish counterparts. This hosted tasting starts with softer, unpeated whiskies, moves through pinot or port barrel-aged whiskies and finishes with a robust peated whisky of Islay. Each style of whisky will be paired with a taste of regional seafood, cheese or chocolate, while your host walks you through different styles while also providing tips for correct techniques for tasting, such as adding a drop of water. This is the tasting that converts you from having a dislike for whisky to an understanding and an appreciation for how delicate and complicated a good whisky can be. It may also confirm that Tassie whiskies are a little better than Scotch too… But that is up to you to decide!
Please note that whiskies change according to the current menu.
Tasmanian Wine Tasting
Thanks to its hot, dry summers and cool winters, Tasmania’s east coast is renowned for its cool climate red and white wines and exceptional sparkling. A wine tasting at Freycinet Lodge is a journey through Tasmania’s wine regions and a comparison between Tasmanian and mainland Australian wines. Your host will explain the subtleties of a Tasmanian sparkling wine, two Tasmanian white wines, two red wines and a dessert wine. You’ll generally enjoy a mainland shiraz or cabernet sauvignon with your tasting, highlighting the importance of terroir in wine making. You’ll learn about why Tasmania grows the varietals that it is so famous for and what makes Tassie so good for sparkling wine production.
Your wines are paired with an assortment of specially paired seafood, shellfish, cheeses and desserts that are prepared by the team at Freycinet Lodge’s signature restaurant, The Bay.
